Payroll Options for Business Central

The Advanced Business Systems team just got back from Directions 2019, the annual Microsoft Dynamics NAV/Business Central partner conference. One of my favorite parts of the conference is learning about new and updated Independent Software Vendor (ISV) solutions. ISVs create apps that extend the functionality of Microsoft Dynamics 365 Business Central. These apps are available through Microsoft AppSource.

Business Central is available in over 20 countries with another dozen countries supported by local Microsoft partners. Payroll processing requirements vary greatly from country to country and as is very common with global SaaS Enterprise Resource Planning (ERP) solutions, Microsoft has opted to leave payroll processing for the ISV community to address.

Outsourced payroll options for Business Central have been around for some time now. These include integrations with Ceridian and ADP. But, for various reasons, not everybody wants to outsource payroll. Up until now, the options were sparse but there are now several options available for those that want to run their payroll inhouse.

The first option I want to talk about is Primo Payday. While new to Business Central the folks behind Primo Payday have extensive experience with a NAV based payroll module and took this experience and applied it to their Business Central offering. Primo Payday is embedded right into Business Central and looks just like any other Business Central module. It provides features such as automated tax table updates, easy to use setup wizards, really everything you need for basic payroll processing. Primo Payday is available in the US.

If your payroll needs are more complex there is another new option called Payroll Now. Payroll now actually builds on Primo Payday and adds employee portal capabilities, ACA compliance reporting and e-filing, HR onboarding and federal and state tax filing. Integrity Data is the company behind Payroll Now. Traditionally a Dynamics Great Plains ISV, they have jumped on the Business Central bandwagon and have a proven track record and experience with advanced payroll solutions. Like Primo Payday, Payroll Now is a US only offering.

Greenshades is another company with a long track record in the Great Plains space and I am told is preparing to launch an integrated payroll solution for Business Central later this year. While it won’t be embedded like the Primo Payday and Payroll Now options it should offer a competitive rich set of functionalities when it is released.

For a different approach to in house payroll, you also have the option to use QuickBooks Payroll alongside Business Central. Microsoft has developed a QuickBooks Payroll File Import app to import your QuickBooks payroll transaction data to the Business Central general ledger.

There are also several foreign country options available:

If you have payroll requirements for countries not listed above the best approach is to contact a local Dynamics 365 partner in that country. They will often have integrations available to local payroll providers. If you need help finding a country specific Business Central partner I recommend visiting the Microsoft Solution Providers site.
