A Technical Recipe for Success: NAV XMLport TextEncoding Error Solution

Recently, I had an issue with a client that could not import a file through an XMLport in NAV.  I had encountered this before, but when you don’t do something every day, you tend to forget the tips and tricks that you have learned along the way.  After I had next to zero luck finding a clear solution to this problem, it hit me like a lightening bolt on what should be done! I decided today to put this simple solution out there for all to use.

Have you ever encountered this error when trying to import a file using an XMLport in NAV?

‘.’, hexadecimal value 0x00, is an invalid character. Line 1, position 97.

It seems cryptic and really doesn’t point to the underlying issue. The problem is the TextEncoding setting on the XMLport.  A simple setting change can remedy this problem.

Design the XMLport, select the bottom most blank line, click Shift-F4 to view the properties of the XMLport, and change the settings below.
