How to – Changing SQL Database Versions with NAV

I want to give you a how to guide that will allow you to Change (Upgrade or Downgrade) your SQL Version using NAV.

Recently I found myself in a situation that required me to take the SQL Server Express 2014 NAV Database and downgrade it to SQL Server 2008.

To perform this at the SQL Server Level would be very difficult. This is when I decided to put the .NAVDATA files to work.

Below is the steps necessary to Change SQL Versions Using NAV:

  1. Export All Objects

  2. Export to a Data File

  3. Create New Database with DEV Environment

  4. Create Service Tier

  5. Import All Objects

  6. Create New Temporary Company Name with PowerShell

  7. Import from a Data File

  8. Delete Temporary Company

Export All Objects

The first step in changing the database is to export all objects. You will need all object present in the New Database before you can import the .NAVDATA file.

Export to a Data File

Navigate to Administration/IT Administration/General/Export to a Data File

Enter the Description and place check boxes in Application Data and Application.

Save the NAV Data File

Create New Database with DEV Environment

Enter the Database Name for the New Database.

Create Service Tier

Open the Dynamics NAV Administration Application

Add Instance

Assign the Instance your new Database Name you created in Step 3.

Start The Database Service Tier.

Import All Objects

Import the Object file you created in Step 1

Choose Yes to import all objects.

Synchronize Schema to complete object import.

Create New Temporary Company Name with PowerShell

Note: You will need a Temporary Company name to allow you to open the NAV Client.

Open the Dynamics NAV Administration Shell

Enter the Power Shell Cmdlet:

New-NAVCompany -ServerInstance <NAVServerInstance> -CompanyName <MyCompanyName>

Import from a Data File

Open the NAV Client and Navigate to:

Administration/IT Administration/General/Import from a Data File

Delete Temporary Company

Open the new company that you imported and Navigate to /Departments/Administration/IT Administration/General/Companies

Remove the Temporary Company created in step 6.

You have now successfully changed your SQL Version.
