Fresh from the Microsoft Dynamics NAV partner conference, I’m eager to share information on payroll options for Business Central. Payroll was a hot topic at Directions 2019, the annual NAV and Business Central partner conference.
So, for everyone looking into their payroll options as they transition to Business Central, here’s everything you need to know.
One of my favorite parts of Directions conferences is getting to learn about new and updated ISV solutions. ISVs (Independent Software Vendors) are the people who create apps that extend the functionality of Microsoft Dynamics 365 Business Central. These apps are available through Microsoft AppSource.
Payroll Apps that Enhance Microsoft Dynamics 365 Business Central
Microsoft’s popular Enterprise Resource Planning (ERP) solution, Business Central, is available in over 20 countries. On top of that, there are another dozen or so countries supported by local Microsoft partners. It’s a global solution that spans all major markets, economies, and, by extension, regulatory bodies.
Payroll processing requirements vary greatly from country to country. Microsoft has opted to leave payroll processing for the ISV community to address, as is common with global SaaS ERP solutions.
Outsourced payroll options for Business Central have been around for some time now. These include integrations with Ceridian and ADP. For various reasons, however, not everybody wants to outsource payroll.
Up until now, in-house payroll options were sparse. Luckily, there are now several options available for those who wish to run their payroll in-house. Let’s take a look at a few of them.
The first option I want to talk about is Primo Payday. The folks behind Primo Payday, while new to Business Central, have extensive experience with a NAV-based payroll module. They took this experience and applied it to their Business Central offering.
Primo Payday is embedded right into Business Central and looks just like any other Business Central module. This payroll solution provides features such as automated tax table updates, easy-to-use setup wizards...really, everything you need for basic payroll processing. Primo Payday is available in the US.
If your payroll needs are more complex, there is another new option called Payroll Now that’s worth looking at.
Payroll Now builds upon Primo Payday and adds:
Employee portal capabilities
ACA compliance reporting and e-filing
Federal and state tax filing
Integrity Data is the ISV behind Payroll Now. Traditionally a Dynamics GP ISV, Integrity Data has jumped on the Business Central bandwagon with a proven track record and experience with advanced payroll solutions. Like Primo Payday, Payroll Now is only offered within the US.
Greenshades Payroll Solution
Greenshades is another company with a long history in the Great Plains space. I am told Greenshades is preparing to launch an integrated payroll solution for Business Central later this year. While it won’t be embedded like the Primo Payday and Payroll Now options, it should offer a competitive rich set of functionalities when it is released.
QuickBooks Payroll Import App for Business Central
For a different approach to in-house payroll, you also have the option to use QuickBooks Payroll alongside Business Central. Microsoft has developed a QuickBooks Payroll File Import app to import your QuickBooks payroll transaction data to the Business Central general ledger.
There are also several foreign country options available:
Insight Works Canadian Payroll is a Canadian payroll option.
Dialog Focus Payroll is available in Australia.
Payroll System for Taiwan is for use in Taiwan.
Do you have payroll requirements for countries not listed above? If so, the best approach is to contact a local Dynamics 365 partner in that country. They’ll often have integrations available to local payroll providers. If you need help finding a country-specific Business Central partner, I recommend visiting the Microsoft Solution Providers site.
